World Food Day takes place on 16 October 2026, providing an opportunity to raise awareness of global food and nutrition challenges and the importance of building more sustainable and resilient food systems.
The theme for World Food Day 2026 is “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.” This year’s campaign highlights the role of innovation in transforming agrifood systems and improving access to nutritious food, while recognising that innovation can take many forms, from scientific and technological advances to traditional knowledge and new approaches developed by communities.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) emphasises that innovation alone is not enough. New ideas and solutions need to be adapted to local contexts, supported by investment and policy, and made accessible to the people and communities who need them. Collaboration across agriculture, nutrition, science, policy and other sectors is therefore an important part of creating lasting change.
For the nutrition community, World Food Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the connections between food systems, nutrition, health and sustainability, and on how evidence, innovation and knowledge can contribute to healthier and more sustainable food futures.
IUNS is pleased to share information about World Food Day 2026 with our members and wider networks. We encourage colleagues to explore the campaign and its resources and consider how this year’s theme connects with their own work in food and nutrition.
