The Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN) held its 55th Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting from September 15–18, 2025, at the Obi Wali International Conference Centre, Port Harcourt. The event brought together about 800 nutrition experts, researchers, policymakers, development partners, and students from across Nigeria and beyond.
The conference began with a Pre-Conference Workshop themed “From Ideas to Impact: Practical Skills in Effective Grantsmanship” to equip participants with practical knowledge in proposal development, research communication, and impact-oriented project design.
The Opening Ceremony of the Conference was held on September 16 under the chairmanship of His Highness Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II, Ph.D., CON, Emir of Kano and Chairman, Nutrition Society of Nigeria Board of Trustees. The President, Prof. Salisu Maiwada Abubakar FNSN, presented the welcome address and opening remark was delivered by followed by Dr. Adaeze Chidinma Oreh, Immediate Past Commissioner of Health, Rivers State. Prof. Nkechi Ene-Obong delivered the Keynote Address. Many government ministries, departments and agencies including the Federal and States Ministries of Health and Social Welfare; Agriculture and Food Security; Budget and Economic Planning; Innovation, Science and Technology; Women Affairs; Rivers State Government, Rivers State Primary Health Care Board; NAFDAC; NPHCDA; development partners including Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, Nutrition International, UNICEF, Helen Keller International, Civil Society for Scaling Up Nutrition in Nigeria, Aliko Dangote Foundation, Evidence Action, FHI 360, and development Research and Projects Centre among others actively supported and participated in the conference. Other professional bodies and indigenous organizations like Nigerian Medical Association, Institute of Dietitian in Nigeria, Dietetic Association of Nigeria, Xpertsolutions, Nutrition Drive for Healthy Diet Initiative (NDDI Africa) also supported and participated in the Conference.
The technical sessions featured eight plenary presentations and over 40 scientific oral and poster abstracts, showcasing emerging research and innovations in nutrition policy, maternal health, community nutrition, and food systems strengthening. Key highlights included Strengthening MIYCN in Nigeria: From Policy to Practice, presented by Mrs. Ladidi K. Bako-Aiyegbusi, mni (FMoH&SW), Driving Sustainable Maternal, Infant and Young Child Nutrition in Nigeria by Prof. Olumuyiwa Owolabi on behalf of UNICEF, Women-Led Nutrition and Livelihoods in Fufore LGA by Donna Edwin and a fortification perception study by Bolarinwa Dudulewa on behalf of Helen Keller International. Others include Strengthening Anaemia Control and MMS Uptake in Nigeria by Prof. K. M. Anigo and Dr. Anthony Oko-Isu on behalf of CS-SUNN, Assessment of the implementation of the 2016–2025 National Policy on Food and Nutrition, and an in-depth review of the Cost of a Healthy Diet (CoHD) by Dr. Olutayo Adeyemi and Dr. Carol Josephon behalf of GAIN; Improving maternal and child nutrition outcomes through strengthened community structures in northern Nigeria by Nutrition International.
Additional conference activities included the induction of new 372 NSN members, the ADF–NSN Interschool Nutrition Debate, and the prestigious NSN Lifetime Achievement Award presented to Prof. Ngozi Nnam, FNSN, Immediate Past President of FANUS and newly elected IUNS Council Member, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to nutrition leadership and scholarship across Africa.
As the conference ended, participants reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening research translation, advancing evidence-based policies, and expanding innovative nutrition interventions nationwide. The 55th NSN Scientific Conference underscored the Society’s pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s nutrition landscape, enhancing multi-sectoral collaboration, and inspiring the next generation of nutrition professionals.
