A new peer-reviewed restrospective study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition examines the association between dietary alignment with Canada’s Front-of-Package (FOP) nutrition labeling policy and risk of hospitalization. Using nationally representative Canadian nutrition survey data linked to routinely collected hospital administrative databases, the authors developed novel, policy-relevant dietary alignment indexes and their association for all-cause and diet-related hospital bed-days. The findings demonstrate that poorer alignment with FOP labeling thresholds is associated with a higher risk of hospitalization, highlighting the potential role of FOP policies in reducing healthcare burden at the population level, globally. This research provides timely evidence to inform nutrition policy, surveillance, and prevention strategies in Canada and internationally.
