Nutrition Society of Nigeria Celebrates World Food Day 2025

The Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN) marked World Food Day 2025 on the 16th of October with activities across the country, uniting members, partners, and communities under the global theme “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future.” 11 state chapters actively participated in the celebration, engaging in school programs, community outreach, health education, and media activities to promote better nutrition practices and encourage collective action for a more food-secure Nigeria.

In Cross River state, community fitness and advocacy walks were held alongside nutrition education sessions, while Ekiti state engaged students in school gardening to encourage home-grown vegetables and healthier eating at household level. In Ondo State, NSN partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture to provide free nutrition assessments and counseling, complemented by colorful displays of local food varieties. Meanwhile, Oyo State conducted fruit distribution for pregnant women, radio and TV engagements, and financial support to encourage access to nutritious food. Lagos State also hosted a virtual webinar featuring expert presentations on food hygiene, nutrition, and sustainable diets, attracting participants from across Nigeria and the diaspora.

In Kano State, a cooking demonstration was held in partnership with GAIN brought together over 150 participants to prepare nutritious meals using affordable vegetables. In Abuja, an outreach program empowered 150 mothers and caregivers with nutrition education and food items to support healthy meal preparation at home. Other state chapters conducted school programs, food demonstrations, and awareness campaigns that strengthened understanding of adequate diets and sustainable food habits.

The Nutrition Society of Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to advancing nutrition education, promoting healthier communities, and working hand in hand with partners to build a more food-secure future for all Nigerians.
